Prep: Separate you class into groups of four. Three is acceptable, but one person will have to take two roles. Have them decide who will be person A, B, C, and D. Tell the class that they will be watching a video. The video is cut into clips, and the clips are out of order. They will watch only their part, describe it to their partners, and decide the order of the clips together so it makes a story (ABDC, DCBA, etc.)

Pre-teach: Watch the clip and decide what are the key vocabulary words they will need for the activity. Action words (tap the keys, stick hands up, pull someone’s ear) and words that describe appearance (chubby, skinny, bald) are the most important. This way they can describe clearly who does what. Teach those in any way you see fit.
Besides vocab, it’s vital to give them scaffolding for carrying out the conversation:
“Who wants to go first?” “How about you go first?” “I’ll go first.”
“In my clip there was…
“First, …” “Then, …” “Finally, …”
“What did you say?”
“I think you’re (first, second, third, last, next, after him, before him).”
“I think the order is…”
“Hey, don’t speak (NL).”
“I need to ask the teacher a question.”

During:
Tell person B, C, and D to close their eyes. Only, person A is allowed to watch Clip A. Start the video. When the clip ends, tell person A to close their eyes, and B to open their eyes. They watch their clip. Do the same for C and D. At the end, tell them they have 6 minutes to discuss and write down an answer.

Go around and assist anyone who needs help. Write down good examples of TL, common mistakes, and use of NL to write on the board to talk about later.

In the last 30 seconds request for them to write down their answers. When time runs out, have them lift their answers in the air and look at eachothers’. Tell them a succinct summary of the story in the TL. Ask them if they still think they are correct, but don’t let them change their answers. Replay the clip

Post: After the clip has played out, review the correct answer and any notes you took while hanging out during the Discusison phase. I like to commend good English and point in the general direction where it came from, fix some interesting mistakes, and ask students to translate any native language that was uttered.
